AlZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION MEMORIES IN THE MAKING…A HUGE HIT

This year, I attended the Alzheimer’s Association’s Memories in the Making Art auction with my mother. She stood in for my wife who had just given birth to our son, Levi James, just days earlier.

It was a great evening and really allowed the spotlight to shine on the truly wonderful pieces of artwork which the program participants create throughout the year. At SeniorCare Homes we bring residents to paint every other Thursday at the Alzheimer’s Association and have begun framing and posting artwork in our home. SeniorCare residents are able to paint and then enjoy a TCBY down in Prairie Village. We are looking forward to having resident artwork considered for next years auction.

Memories in the Making is a weekly art program sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association and hosted in assisted living communities, nursing facilities and adult day programs around the Chapter’s bi-state service area.

Groups of 5 to 10 individuals are led by a trained, experienced volunteer artist and a facility staff person for a one-hour weekly art session.

For more information about the Memories in the Making© program, or to volunteer as a group facilitator, please contact Karen Clond at 913-831-3888 or karen.clond@alz.org.

SENIORCARE HOMES, LLC ANNOUNCES OPENING OF NEW RESIDENTIAL ASSISTED LIVING HOME

Date: April 1, 2008

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS. (April 11, 2008) – The Johnson County Metropolitan area has begun to receive more options for seniors who, due to functional limitations, require assistance with personal care or nursing supervision. SeniorCare Homes has opened the first of six home-like upscale assisted living environments that are integrated into neighborhoods.

A smaller and more personal alternative to a traditional nursing home or assisted living center, the first new facility at 9939 Foster Street in Overland Park provides supervision for up to five individuals.  Each resident is provided a private or semi-private living area, all meals in accordance with dietary needs, medical supervision and planned daily activities.  Transportation is also provided as needed.

SeniorCare Homes is licensed as a “Home Plus” facility by the state of Kansas and adheres to a rigorous set of regulations and surveys.  It accepts private pay and long term care insurance, and residents use Medicare to visit doctors and hospitals as needed.

SeniorCare Homes is unique in limiting resident-to-staff ratios to a maximum of five to one.  This low, carefully monitored ratio of caregiver to resident allows SeniorCare Homes staff to devote quality, personal time to each resident throughout the day.  Regularly scheduled activities include music and pet therapy, personal hobbies, social gatherings, visits to local activities and points of interest, and other local events.  The first residence includes an activities sunroom, private terrace and walking path, garden and seasonal landscaping.

SeniorCare Homes was founded in 2007 by Jerry Pullins, Jr., president and managing director, who has more than a decade of experience helping families in the healthcare, funeral and hospice fields.  “I want to see people enjoy a place that feels like home while benefiting from personalized care and support in a secure environment,” Pullins said.

Pullins’ desire to create SeniorCare Homes was born after helping care for his grandmother as she shifted between a memory unit and skilled care.  She ultimately died in the hospital despite her wishes to stay at home.  In search of a better option, he founded SeniorCare Homes and has transformed residential homes into secure living environments.

“We are extremely pleased with the welcome we have received from the City of Overland Park, our neighbors in Brookridge Estates, the faith community and the local medical community,” said Pullins.  “The interest we have seen so far is indicative of the demand we know exists for this type of lifestyle for the memory impaired or for those who just need assistance as they age.”

The additional five assisted care homes are planned for opening in the next two years.
